A conversation about the role of role models, mentors, and sponsors in advancing Black women’s executive careers. This blog post was inspired by key takeaways shared in our masterclass, featuring Michelle Awuku-Tatum, PCC, Founder of myfactor coaching and consulting.
Role Models are individuals who inspire you and whom you learn from by observation, setting examples that you aspire to follow.
Mentors are senior individuals who provide direct advice, support, and skill development that help you navigate day-to-day challenges and long-term career planning.
Sponsors are influential figures who actively promote your career advancement by using their social capital. They open doors to opportunities and advocate for you in decision-making forums.
Sponsorship should be viewed as a mutually beneficial relationship where both parties invest in each other’s success. Unlike mentors, who provide guidance and advice, sponsors actively use their influence and network to advance your career. It's essential to be clear about what you need and how your sponsor can help you achieve your goals.
Black women often face unique challenges in securing effective sponsorship due to systemic biases and power dynamics. A crucial approach to managing this involves assessing genuine support by observing if your sponsor is prepared to openly endorse you, enhance your visibility in crucial settings, and support your career ambitions.
Moreover, broadening your support network to include multiple sponsors, even those from different backgrounds, offers diverse opportunities and viewpoints.
A successful sponsorship relationship is a two-way street. While your sponsor provides opportunities and visibility, you should also offer value in return. This could be in the form of sharing industry insights, new trends, or expertise that benefits your sponsor.
Formalizing these relationships helps ensure that both parties are clear about expectations and commitments. For sponsors, this relationship is not just about helping you; it also enhances their own credibility and chances for promotion. Therefore, cultivating and maintaining a formal sponsor relationship can significantly impact your career trajectory.
Strategic relationships encompass several key elements that are crucial for career advancement. These relationships provide visibility within your industry, advocacy for your skills and accomplishments, access to critical information, and support during challenging times. A good sponsor will not only help others see your potential but also guide you through complex professional landscapes, providing both confidence and protection.
